The aim of this thesis is to push away the limits of a generic vision and to observe the links between the detective novel and the "great literature". This work will study the origins of the genre in France and in England and America as well during the XIXth and XXth centuries. Then, we will look into the structure of the genre, its special feature, its codification, the special treatment of language and the function of the narrator in the detective novel. Finally, we could study the ambitions of this genre which borrow from philosophy, sociology, psychology and which grow richer of its history itself.
