Résumé

Esteban de Arteaga (1747-1799), espagnol exilé en Italie en raison de sa brève appartenance à la Compagnie de Jésus, devint dans son pays d’accueil un théoricien du théâtre et de l’opéra reconnu. Homme de lettres et érudit au parcours atypique et au caractère impétueux, il rédigea divers ouvrages en italien comme en espagnol, et fut en particulier l’auteur de Le rivoluzioni del teatro musicale italiano […]. À travers notre travail de recherche, nous avons souhaité proposer une lecture approfondie de la seconde édition de cet ouvrage, publié à Venise entre 1784 et 1787. La présente étude est construite sous la forme d’une édition commentée, composée d’abord d’une introduction qui vise à offrir un éclairage sur l’auteur et son ouvrage, sur ses théories, ses sources et influences internationales, son style d’écriture riche, ses singularités et sa place dans le panorama des théoriciens de son temps. La seconde partie de cette étude correspond aux commentaires systématiques du texte. Les commentaires sont de différents types : il s’agit d’élucidations des références littéraires et historiques citées par l’auteur, de contextualisations du contenu et de l’écriture de l’ouvrage, d’informations sur les sources que nous avons pu identifier, d’éclaircissements sur les concepts majeurs, idées et termes récurrents, ou encore de mises en relief des similitudes ou différences entre les écrits de l’auteur ou entre les deux éditions de l’ouvrage. Cette thèse vise ainsi à mettre en lumière les apports d’Arteaga à la théorie et à l’histoire du théâtre et de l’opéra, en soulignant la figure hors normes et la singulière caractéristique européenne de l’homme de lettres que fut cet auteur.

Résumé

Esteban de Arteaga (1747-1799), a Spaniard exiled to Italy because of his brief affiliation with the Society of Jesus, became a recognized theatre and opera theorist in his host country. As a man of letters and a scholar with an atypical background and impetuous character, he wrote various works in Italian and Spanish, and was in particular the author of Le rivoluzioni del teatro musicale italiano […]. In this thesis, I wanted to propose an in-depth study of the second edition of this work, published in Venice between 1784 and 1787. This study is constructed in the form of a commented edition, first composed of an introduction aimed at offering an insight on the author and his work, on his theories, his international sources and influences, his rich writing style, his singularities and his place in the panorama of theoreticians of his time. The second part of this study corresponds to the systematic comments of the text. These comments are of different types: they can be elucidations of the literary and historical references cited by the author, contextualizations of the content and writing of the work, informations on the sources that I was able to identify, clarifications on major concepts, ideas and recurring terms, or highlighting similarities or differences between the author’s writings or between the two editions of the book. This thesis aims to shed light on Arteaga’s contributions to the theory and history of theatre and opera, pointing out the unusual figure and the unique multicultural, European characteristic of the man of letters this author was.
