Sociolinguistic analysis of Reunion Island's representations in tourist promotion discourses

All tourist destinations are the subject of fantasized representations. Reunion, a Frenchindianoceanic department, not only is no exception to the rule but its insularity and itsdistance from its "metropolis" can only feed the imagination. This research focuses on the representations of the island in several tourist promotion media: tourist guides, posters, campaigns and promotional films. What tourist image of this French department in the Indian Ocean do they offer? What do they retain of the island and what representations of this territory do they crystallize? The posed gaze(s) take on(have) what types of positioning? Our research is part of a multidisciplinary approach by developing a linguistic and infocommunicational approach. The contribution of information and communication sciences has enabled an exhaustive analysis of promotional discourse by integrating in particular digital promotional media and the discourse of promoters' digital socio-networks. In order to grasp the singularities relating to the discourse of tourist promotion about Reunion, a comparative analysis seemed necessary to us. We first put together a corpus made up of three tourist guides and brought out the salient features of the representations on Reunion: the Petit Futé, the GeoGuide and the Lonely Planet. We then, in a second step, studied a total of fourteen tourist guides in order to identify the characteristics of the tourist discourse relating to the islands in general and the specificities of Reunion. These analyzes were supplemented by field surveys with local promoters, such as the IRT, restaurant owners and a local guide, who have precise knowledge of the terrain and its complexity. This work is based on lexical analyzes but also proposes to make as significant as possible the implicit, the unspoken in order to offer an original reading of the tourist promotion of a singular destination with a violent past linked to colonization and to put highlight the current balance of power. Finally, because the reception of the promotional speeches turns out to be enlightening on their effectiveness, the point of view of people who do not know Reunion was collected thanks to a survey on the IRT's promotional films and another on the presentations of the Villèle museum by tourist guides. This museum has also been the subject of a very specific case study and asked us for an ethnographic observation of two hundred and fifty-four comments posted on the TripAdvisor site. More generally, we have proposed a final questionnaire in order to understand the clichés linked to insularity. Also, although they are not targeted by these promotional speeches, Reunionese were questioned in order to evaluate the correlation between the tourist image of Reunion and reality by means of a questionnaire on the designation "island intense” used by promoters. The results of this thesis highlight three main points. First, although it is a French department, Reunion is represented as a foreign destination. The guides highlight all the distinctive elements (population, culture, gastronomy) and therefore symbolically distance the island from mainland France. Then, the second shows that the process of exoticization developed by the guides is mobilized for all destinations and is part of a European-centric positioning which consists in making Europe the norm. Finally, the third highlights the tendency of local promoters to adapt their discourse to those of their counterparts in France by adopting the same general rules of operation of tourist discourse and using the same stereotyped images. It seems, finally, that these representations are closely linked to the colonial heritage of the island. Although these are commercial arguments aimed at European travellers, tourist discourses, as we know them today, continue to perpetuate mechanisms of domination. Like the colonial exhibitions of the early 20th century, these discourses combine both a colonial and phallocratic posture.
