Résumé

Ce travail se propose d’analyser la représentation de la condition juive dans les romans d’Irène Némirovsky, d’Albert Cohen et de Joseph Roth, en explorant le thème d’une marginalité toujours en équilibre instable entre assimilation et in-assimilation, dont le juif est au XXe siècle le représentant le plus emblématique. En effet, les protagonistes issus de notre corpus sont en majorité des juifs ayant abandonné leur monde d’origine pour tenter, sans succès, de s’intégrer dans la société bourgeoise occidentale, demeurant ainsi entre assimilation et assimilation manquée. Bien que les thématiques de la marginalité et de l’assimilation juive soient spécifiques, notre hypothèse est que le matériel juif qui imprègne notre corpus a été élaboré pour le transformer en paradigme de situations d’intérêt universel, plus généralement humain. Nous appuyant sur les concepts de paria et de parvenu forgés par Hannah Arendt, nous établissons une analogie féconde entre les dynamiques de l’assimilation juive et celles du processus d’élévation sociale propres à toute la société bourgeoise, celle-ci étant par excellence une classe de parvenus. En ce sens, le roman français d’ascension sociale du XIXe siècle devient l’un des modèles possibles des œuvres de notre corpus, nous permettant par ailleurs de mêler le discours autour de cette thématique à un discours de genre littéraire. Grâce à cette comparaison avec les textes de la tradition française, nous visons à montrer la manière dont les œuvres de Némirovsky, Cohen et Roth, décrivant les apories du procès d’assimilation juive, nous révèlent les contradictions de l’intégration et les illusions d’égalité sociale sur lesquelles la société bourgeoise moderne se fonde.

This thesis aims to analyse the representation of the Jewish condition as it emerges from the novels by Irène Némirovsky, Albert Cohen and Joseph Roth, by exploring the theme of diversity in an unstable equilibrium between assimilation and non-assimilation, of which the 20th century Jew can be considered the most emblematic model. The selected corpus of texts, in fact, almost always contemplates as protagonists Jewish figures who have abandoned their original world and tried to integrate in the middle class society, without ever succeeding and therefore remaining perennially poised between assimilation and non-assimilation. Even though the Jewish diversity and assimilation represent very specific subjects, the proposed thesis is that the Jewish matter that permeates my corpus has been elaborated in a way to become the paradigm of universal situations, associated to all mankind. Starting from the two concepts of paria and parvenu theorised by Hannah Arendt, it has been demonstrated a fruitful analogy between the dynamics of the Jewish assimilation and the mechanisms of the social ascent that is typical of the middle class, that is par excellence a class of parvenus. In this context, the “social ascent” French novel of the 19th century becomes a possible model for the novels of the corpus; moreover, this allowed to insert the thematic discourse within an approach of textual type. Through this comparison with the texts of the French tradition, we intended to show how the works by Némirovsky, Cohen and Roth, describing the aporia of the Jewish assimilation process, are able to reveal the contradictions and the illusions of social equality on which the whole modern middle class society lies.
