Résumé

Fondé sur l'analyse de plus de deux cent exemples archéologiques et d'une trentaine de modèles, ce travail propose une première synthèse architecturale sur l'habitat urbaine d'époque hellénistique et romaine dans la chôra égyptienne. Le développement s'articule autour de trois points : - une analyse élaborée essentiellement sur la base d'observations et de réexamens de terrain des principaux matériaux mis en œuvre en construction domestique, en particulier de la brique crue ; - une synthèse élargie des techniques de construction (murs, couvrements, traitements des ouvertures) fondée sur des données qualitatives et quantitatives qui soulignent la contribution importante de l'époque étudiée à l'étude de l'architecture non monumentale en terre en Égypte ancienne ; - sur la base d'une sélection affinée des plans, d'une classification typo-chronologique préliminaire, d'une synthèse statistique et d'un inventaire des équipements internes et externes, ce travail tente enfin d'éclairer la genèse et l'évolution des formes au cours de la période et participe, par une projection tridimensionnelle du cadre quotidien, à la caractérisation de ses principaux espaces et de son organisation. Ainsi, à une phase de l'archéologie égyptienne où les aspects urbains provinciaux retrouvent une place importante, l'approche met en lumière une construction domestique inscrite dans une continuité où prédominent les faciès architecturaux traditionnels et l'identité égyptienne. Les premiers temps de la royauté lagide illustrent bien permanence des solutions locales et les constats formulés viennent nuancer les apports hellénistiques régulièrement évoqués en parallèle du phénomène de fondation et de refondation des agglomérations qui marque cette période précoce

Archaeology, architecture and images of the hellenistics and roman townhouse in the egyptian chôra

Résumé

Being based on the analysis of more than 200 archaeological examples and about 30 models of houses, this work provides a first architectural synthesis about the urban habitat of the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the Egyptian chôra. The development is constructed around three main themes: - a detailed analysis based essentially on the observations and investigations in the field focusing on the principal building materials used for domestic construction, especially mud-brick ; - a wider synthesis encompassing construction techniques (walls, roofs and ceilings, treatment of openings) which are based on qualitative and quantitative data emphasizing the important contribution of the relevant period to the study of non- monumental mud-brick architecture in ancient Egypt ; - on the basis of a careful selection of plans, a first classification according to type and chronology has been conducted as well a statistical synthesis as including the inventory of interior and exterior installations and equipment, this study finally clarifies the evolution of different types within the chosen period and adds to our understanding of the principal characteristics of space and its organization by a three-dimensional projection of the daily environment It is now finally possible to address the domestic construction that is inherent in the continuity or predominance of architectural traditions and Egyptian identity during a phase of Egyptian archaeology where the urban provincial aspects occupy an important place within settlement studies. For the first time, the Lagid rule shows well the adherence to local solutions and the observed facts refine our understanding of the Hellenistic influence which is being regularly referred in connection with the phenomenon of founding and re-founding agglomerations which mark this early period
