Spiritualité, religiosité et cancer : différences de comportement de recherche d'information et de bien-être entre patients croyants et non croyants

Résumé

Notre objectif était d'examiner si le comportement de recherche d'information des patients croyants leur apporte un meilleur bien-être par rapport aux patients non croyants. Nous avons interrogé 144 patients atteints de tous types de cancer et en traitement chimiothérapeutique à l'hôpital de jour de l'unité d'oncologie médicale du centre hospitalier Cochin à Paris. Nous avons étudié leur comportement de recherche d'information, leur bien-être et leur spiritualité / religiosité. Nous avons distingué deux groupes de croyants et un groupe de non croyants répartis selon leur score sur notre échelle de spiritualité / religiosité. Nous confirmons que le comportement de recherche d'information des patients croyants leur apporte un meilleur bien-être par rapport aux patients non croyants. Nous découvrons que le comportement qui procure un meilleur bien-être est adopté par les patients moyennement croyants, et en partie par les patients très croyants. Suite à nos résultats, nous suggérons de prendre en compte les caractéristiques de la croyance (ou de la non croyance) des patients pour la transmission d'informations dans le contexte de soins. La recherche active d'informations et l'évitement des informations menaçantes (lors de situations stressantes) des patients croyants doivent être pris en considération par les soignants pour maintenir leur bien-être. Une attention particulière devrait aussi être portée aux patients non croyants, car ils adoptent un comportement de recherche d'information qui est peu propice au bien-être. D'autres études seront nécessaires pour voir comment améliorer leur comportement de recherche d’information.

Résumé

The objectives of our research was to examine if the information seeking behaviour patterns of patients who are believers bring about a better well-being compared to patients who are non-believers. We questioned 144 patients affected by all types of cancer and undergoing outpatient chemotherapy in the medical oncology unit of the Cochin hospital in Paris. We studied their information seeking behaviour patterns, their well-being and their spirituality / religiosity. We identified two groups of believers and a group of non-believers divided according to their score on our scale of spirituality / religiosity. We confirm that the information seeking behaviour patterns of the patients who are believers bring about a better well-being compared to patients who are non-believers. We discover that the behaviour which procures the best well-being is adopted by the patients who are moderate believers, and in part by patients who are firm believers. Further to our results, we suggest taking into account the degree of belief (or of non-belief) of patients in the disseminating of information in the context of the healthcare. The active seeking of information and the avoidance of alarming information (during stressful situations) of patients who are believers must be taken into consideration by the carers to maintain their well-being. Particular attention should also be given to patients who are non-believers, because they adopt information seeking behaviour patterns which are not conducive to their well-being. Further studies will be necessary to see how to improve their information seeking behaviour patterns.
