The concept of body image in Gabon is multiple by the means of direct contacts with other populations or because of the media. It refers to traditional representations which bind the man to his groups of life and cosmos; with modern perceptions which individualize it. The image of the body concerns the cultural medium in which the subject was born and from that where it evolves/ moves, of its socio-professional condition and its sexual identity. The first which is traditional or modern, provides him during its childhood its representations body. The second produce during adulthood the executives and modes of use of the body and the last directs the physical care. The individuation of the bodies which gradually rise in urban environment push traditional solidarity back which remain still present in the traditional environment. This research rests on the assumption that after a functional loss to an adult occured, the reinvestment of the body image relates to the conservation of its identity referents and the quality of the environmental support. To test this assumption, we used semi-directing interview on the group of patient, the medical staff and the patient family; then a questionnaire on their social relations. It appears that the reinvestment of the body image following a functional loss depends for the subject on the conservation of the fundamental identity elements. Otherwise, it is made possible by the disposal of financial and material means, and or the social enjoyment of capacities of sublimation. The family and friends and its heterogeneity disturb the personal narcissistic reinvestment because it reflects on the subject a sometimes positive image of its body, sometimes harmful one, by disturbing, by this inconstancy, the reinvestment of a different or modified one self.
