Résumé
Le regard est, dans l'œuvre d'Elizabeth Bowen, une thématique majeure qui n'a jusqu'à présent pas été étudiée. Il est à un premier niveau largement présent dans les interactions entre les personnages, mais se fait aussi le vecteur des jugements que porte le narrateur. Au-delà de cette inscription thématique dans la trame romanesque, l'usage du regard et, plus généralement, de procédés liés à l'imagerie visuelle, souligne et subvertit le fonctionnement de la mimésis : il est ainsi l'un des moyens qu'utilise Bowen pour renouveler la représentation romanesque en en faisant un genre hybride au sens de Bakhtine, qui, par-delà sa dimension langagière, pose la problématique du visuel en des termes nouveaux.

Résumé
The gaze is a major thematic element in Elizabeth Bowen's work which has as yet been left unstudied. At its most basic level, the gaze is largely present in the interactions between the characters, but it is also the means by which the narrator's judgements become apparent to the reader. Beyond this thematic use in the plots of the novels, the gaze and the visual imagery it engenders both highlight and subvert the mimetic function of the novels: thus, it serves as a means by which Bowen renews novelistic representation, by transforming the genre into a hybrid reminiscent of Bahktin. Thus, the novel exceeds the limits of language, and confronts the problems linked to the inclusion of the visual in literature in new terms.
