Pocket books publishing in france on innovation and recognition in a cultural industry

Résumé

The present study looks at the ways in which pocket books publishing developped between 1953, when the "livre de poche" first appeared, and 1993, when the first 10 f books were launched, as well as at what this development involved. The study is centred on three major points: - innovation, as it appears in the techniques and procedures underlying the development of pocket books publishing (accounting for its rise and diversification) ; - cultural recognition as a strategic aim in redefining the status of both books and culture, as well as the professional identity of the different parties involved; - the industrial effects of pocket books publishing: development of distribution channels, evolution of sales outlets, standardised production and new economic realities. These three major points underlie the analysis process as a whole (conception, production and distribution). They outline the tensions existing between an evolving profession, together with the conditions of pocket books production, and the notion of editorial risk, the status of books, the life span of traditional publishing, the pay-off for the various participants and the reorganisation of the editorial world itself around the structures of distribution.
