The aim of these thesis is to study the relationships between children and written words in their every day environment. We condiser that an environmental words is composed of a graphic representation (for eg : orangina or smarties) with a setting which can either be a logo (orange peel) or a representation (smarties box). The sample we tested represents 190 children of middle and final year nursery school together with first year primary school (c. P. ), devided according to the following criteria : sex of the child, socio-professional class of the father and school location. The youngest children take these tests twice in may (firstly during the final year at nursery school, secondly during the first year at primary school). In the first part of our work, we are studying the theories of learning the written language, in particular, as regards beginners. The second part gives a detailed account of testing procedures. To gebin with, the children are asked to read twelve environmental graphic representations without context; then with black and white and colour backgrounds. Then suggest unusual ways of we assosiating graphic representations and settings : changed letters or altered setting etc. . . At a later stage, we ask them to identify those same words in the following manner : without the first or last letter, omitting the first or second half of the word, without the upper or lower loops of letters, and at last in conventional writing. Finally, the children are asked to write and without a written example.
