Several therapeutic approaches have been applied in the treatment of anorexia nervosa but their efficacy rest to be confirmed during follow-up. In this clinical study we wanted to evaluate terapeutic effects of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy in the treatment of 50 hospitalised anorexic patients. 33 were of restrictive subtype and 17 had bulimic accesses followed by vomiting. This group of patients was characterised by illness duration of 8 years, age at onset of 18 years, and a body mass index at admission of 14. In addition to biological tests, psychometric assessment, other specific instruments were applies, such as: the eating attitudes test, eating disorder inventory, eating behaviour rating scale, beck depression inventory, hamilton depression rating scale, behavioural observation and analysis. Therapeutic procedure was based on operant conditioning and contract programmes specifying therapeutic goals and therapeutical help provided. The goals were: correction of biological signs of malnutrition and weight increase, introduction of avoided food, modification of eating behaviour, gradual introduction of eating out an t home. Education and cognitive therapy were applied in order to modify erroneous thinking. In bulimic patients, exposure and bulimic prevention sessions were also included in therapeutic programmes. The efficacy of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy on therapeutic goals specified in the text seems satisfactory on a short term, but requires to be confirmed on a long term basis. Although we have followed up some patients until 4 years, analysis were applied until 2 years, due to their small number.
