En cela il a joue un role important -sousestime jusqu'a present par la recherche historique - dans la confrontation qui opposa la culture traditionnelle chinoise ou modele europeen.

In chine, under the republic (1912-1949), the catholic missionary education contributed to the modernization of the country, and in reaction, te the moulding of the national identity, it played an important part which has been underrated so far by historiacal research- in the confrontation between the chinese traditional culture and the european model.
