Land use and sustainable water management in metropolitan areas

  • Résumé

This PhD research project is typically a trans-disciplinary project, considering geographical sciences, hydrological engineering, urban planning and urban water ecology. The main objective is to lead a prospective assessment of land use and water management strategies aiming at ensuring Sustainable Integrated Urban Water Management (SIUWM) at a metropolitan scale with the implementation of a Green and Blue Infrastructure. It will be conducted through case studies in Brazil, in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte (RMBH) involving mainly two catchments and three municipalities: Pampulha catchment (100 km2) and Vargem das Flores catchment (120 km2), both located between two different municipalities. In both catchments, a man-made reservoir achieves different purposes; Pampulha Lake mainly for flood control and tourism, and Vargem das Flores Reservoir for water supply and landscape composition.
