The elder son and his wife as the epicenter of change of the korean family : refusals, acceptances and reinterpretations of the tradition

  • Abstract

The confucian family model still exists today in korea. The married couple of which the husband is also an elder son is the incarnation of this tradition wherby patrilocality and patrilinearity reflect the pre-eminence of the filial relationship over the relationship between the married couple. In light of our corpus (interviews with such couple who have been married for less than ten years), our aim is to describe the nature of married life, which is inevitably linked to intergenerational life. Married couple, however, are increasingly attempting to become independent. The key reason for the change in family relationships is the way in which wives of elder sons interpret the tradition via behavioural language. The filial relationship and the relationship between the married couple are in tension ; the attitudes, roles and concerns of e\ch family member come into conflict. Hence, a new form of family life is constructed.
