During almost half a century (1740-1787), Baculard d'Arnaud (1718-1805) goes through the essentials of his literary career, from tragedy to anecdote. The narrative and the theatrical styles are diversely interlinked with this prolix writer, admired or decried during the XVIIIth century, then forgotten or despised until the publication of major works that have finally taken him seriously. With the purpose of placing the creation of Baculard in the right perspective through his major works, we have defined his position in the areas of theater, novel and history, in order to scan his aesthetic and his imagination, which reveal an ideal of controlled freedom. His writing effectiveness provides solid ground to the baculardian endeavor, based on a concept of Christian "progressive" ethic. But the author, while being fond of the role of magister, sometimes uncovers facets of his private life or allows one to uncover the commitment that gives an initiatic sense to his works. Baculard free-mason, disciple of Voltaire, companion of Fréron, admirer of Rousseau is a literary history all by himself: thereby the achieves a considerable dimension.
