  • Abstract

Henri lopes'work relies on observed facts and presents living images, caming from the society of his time : post-independence. In the first place the modern african woman's condition, her slow evolution and her desire to play a role in the human adventure, beside her male counterpart. Then there is the tripartite confrontation between, on the one hand authority and a submissive people, and on the other hand between an anguished intellectual and an illiterate people or blind authority, jealous of its prerogatives. Lopes doesn't behave as a psychologist or a moralist, least of all as a sociologist or historian. Using an agressive realism, the novelist mobilizes the mockeries and disdain his heroes have for this african society and the unconvincing leaders, presum1tuons with the superiority of their titles, behind which are hidden a certain draught of spirit and a heartlessness vis-a-vis their people's misery. The 'great', in onder to ensure their domination, hide their incompetence, relying on the existing oppressive system, when they do not call for the professional torturers of a foreign power, as is shown in bwakamabe's 'court'. Lopes's four novels, easily assimilated to four literary genres, allow him to appear as a short - story writer in tribaliques, a classical novelist in la nouvelle romance, an epistolerian in sans tam - tam , and as an ardent polemiciste
