Résumé

Le but de mon travail a été celui de développer une recherche historique et épistémologique concernant la découverte du chaos dans l'œuvre du mathématicien Jules-Henri Poincaré (1854-1912). Dans la première partie de ma thèse j'ai analysé, d'un point de vue épistémologique, les articles de Poincaré sur les équations différentielles dans lesquels il avait développé une nouvelle méthode qualitative. J'ai souligné également la présence d'un lien épistémologique entre Poincaré et Leibniz concernant l'idée d'une nouvelle méthode qualitative. J'ai pris ensuite en considération l'article « Sur le problème des trois corps et les équations de la dynamique » publié par Poincaré en 1890 en en soulignant les aspects épistémologique les plus importantes et en mettant en évidence les traits qui ont caractérisés la découverte des dynamiques chaotiques. J'ai cherché enfin à mettre en évidence les liens entre les œuvres philosophiques de Poincaré et sa découverte du chaos.

A complex thought : historical and epistemological reflections on the discovery of chaos in the work of Jules-Henri Poincaré

Résumé

The chief aim of my work has been to develop a historical and epistemological research concerning the discovery of chaotic dynamics by the French mathematician Jules-Henri Poincaré (1854-1912). At first time, I analyzed, starting from an epistemological perspective, the works of Poincaré concerning the differential equations and his introduction of a new qualitative approach. I underlined that such an approach can also be considered as an epistemological link between Poincaré and Leibniz. I analyzed, always from an epistemological point of view, the memoir on the three body problem published by Poincaré in 1890. I showed the epistemological main aspects of such a memoir and the way through which Poincaré discovered chaotic dynamics. In conclusion I focused my interests on the philosophical works of Poincaré and I stressed the link between these works and the discovery of chaos (considering in particular the reflections on physics theories).
