Transitions, Self-construction and vocational development ; the case of french teenagers moving from a comprehensive junior high-school to a vocational school
In today’s society, individuals are more and more often confronted with multiple changes in their life course. In this context, the notion of transition appears as a major one in vocational psychology, the domain of which becomes henceforth broader than that of school and career issues and encompasses – as a core one – the topic of the individual’s own self-construction. To cope with these multiple transitions, the individuals’ capabilities to adapt are becoming critical. Adolescence is such a transition time, all the more so when students have to go through a major change in their school career. It is the case for some French high-school students who leave the comprehensive school curriculum and enter a vocation school. This research focused precisely on this transition. It approached these students’ self-construction psychological processes in relation with their formation of a vocational identity and their school commitment. Conducted from a constructivist framework, this study mobilized the concepts of psychosocial transition, active socialization and identity. It compared two students’ samples (9th graders and 10th graders in vocational schools) at a one year interval in three domains: the systemic organization of their self-anticipations in different life-spheres, their school motivation and success. A statistical comparison of the two groups and a longitudinal qualitative study of four students led to the description of four self-anticipation profiles in connection with school commitment. An analysis of these observations permitted to formulate some theoretical and practical considerations on the role of activity in the construction of the self.
