Our study questions the systematics of genus Genetta and the phylogenetic positions of genera Prionodon, Poiana and Osbornictis relative to genets in the framework of the phylogeny of Viverridae. Several types of materials were used: discrete characters (morphology), collection localities (distributional range) and nucleotidic sequences (cytochrome b and tranthyretin intron I genes). Our investigations lead to the redefinition of the phylogenetic relationships within Viverrinae and the description of a new genet, Genetta bourloni Gaubert, 2003. The morphological evolution of feliformians and the reconstruction of evolutionary scenarios for the diversification of the genus Genetta in Africa are discussed
