The comparative analysis of different legislative texts and curricula as well as the schoolbooks published in the period 1875-1900, is a means to define the place and the contents of the "grammar" component in the teaching of french. The process of reorganizing the types of studies - secondary and primary education - in the system which is settling around 1880, produces evident effects on the grammatical component. The school grammar is shaped by its relation with other curricula and programs for other languages. The grammatical domain inherits then various and contradictory finalities which give it a controversial status of component in the french language teaching.
